NIST Policy

NIST is the National Institute for Standards and Technology. It was founded in 1901 and is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. The mission of NIST is to "promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurements science, standards and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life."

From an IT perspective, NIST has developed several standards and guidelines to ensure the security of IT systems. These are in the form of special publications like 800-30, 800- 37, 800-53 etc. Tripwire has implemented high and medium baselines for the 800-53 standard and the 800-18 standard as its policies for each supported platform.
