VMware Hardening Guide Policy

Organizations of all sizes rely on products from VMware, the global leader in virtualized solutions, to reduce their capital and operating expenses. Using VMware, customers can create several virtual machines (VMs) on a server, maximizing the computing power of the platform, while reducing the need to purchase other hardware for the same functions.

Critical to this operation is the VMware ESX Server, or hypervisor. The hypervisor is the layer that sits between the hardware and the VMs, controlling the partitioning of the physical servers and resource allocation of the physical machine. Incorrect configuration of this hypervisor can compromise the security of a virtual environment.

Tripwire® Enterprise provides a VMware Hardening Guide Policy that provides a proactive method of assessing hypervisor configurations. This policy was developed in collaboration with VMware and is based on the VMware Infrastructure 3 Security Hardening whitepaper. It addresses key configuration settings within VMware ESX Server that ensure your VMware hypervisor is configured correctly and securely. This significantly reduces the possible of security vulnerabilities due to misconfiguration.

With the Tripwire Enterprise VMware Hardening Guide Policy, you gain greater visibility into the configuration of your VMware ESX Server and take a major step towards achieving a known and trusted state for your virtual environment.
