Extending HBSS Information Assurance with Tripwire Enterprise
The types of cybersecurity threats DOD face and the policies required to govern information assurance have dramatically changed since the HBSS contract was awarded in 2006. NIST Special Publication 800-137 places a high priority on continuous monitoring, requiring automated reports from security and systems management tools in near real time — a requirement that wasn’t in place when HBSS was initially deployed.
According to Mark Orndorff, DISA's program executive officer for mission assurance, "...over the years, one of the fundamental lessons learned has been that if you can just get your systems configured correctly and keep them configured correctly, a lot of the attack vectors go away. But when you try to get that same compliance across 5 million computers, it can get pretty complicated."
Continuous monitoring is paramount to achieving Mr. Orndorff’s view. Tripwire makes that job faster and easier. By combining best-of-breed file integrity monitoring with comprehensive security configuration control, Tripwire extends HBSS boundary protection to critical data protection. Tripwire monitors and detects suspicious, unusual or anomalous behavior and fortifies the IT infrastructure.
