Security Configuration Management -- The Keys to the Digital Kingdom

IT configurations serve as the keys to the digital kingdom of your organization’s IT infrastructure and its valuable data. Hardened configurations protect the kingdom by denying hackers those keys. Yet if you examined almost any enterprise organization, you’d find poor configuration settings. These include vendor-supplied default passwords that can be easily guessed, services being enabled that shouldn’t be, along with many others that introduce vulnerabilities. What’s more, you’d find little or no integration between configuration solutions and other IT security controls, when they can so clearly be leveraged to increase defensive posture. Is IT security asleep in the guardhouse? Highly unlikely. So why is managing these configurations so difficult, and what can IT security do about it?

In this webcast, Diana Kelley, IANS faculty member, and Tripwire discuss:

  • What a configuration file is, and how these files can serve as the keys to the digital kingdom.
  • Examples of poor configurations, including complex configuration errors, and their consequences.
  • The many challenges IT security faces when trying to manage IT configurations for security.
  • What capabilities define security configuration management (SCM), and a practical approach to implementing it that overcomes organizational challenges.
