A fifth-grade student from the greater Montreal area has admitted participating in the student uprising in spring 2012 and hacking multiple websites and launching attacks resulting in as much as $60,000 in damages.

The boy is charged with launching distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, stealing sensitive data, and defacing websites. Targets included the Montreal police, the Quebec Institute of Public Health, and the site of a government organization from Chile.

Reports indicate the boy traded data he stole from servers to members of the Anonymous movement in exchange for video games, and was quoted as warning others that “it’s easy to hack but do not go there too much, they will track you down.”

“He saw it as a challenge, he was only 12 years old,” his lawyer said. “There was no political purpose.”
