Tripwire’s CTO Dwayne Melancon discusses SHODAN, which “exposed dozens of digital security risks involving local businesses, schools and governments, including what appears to be backdoor access to systems belonging to Washington County government and the Portland Trail Blazers.”

KATU reporter Dan Tilkin says the information for the investigation was provided by SHODAN’s creator John Matherly.

“This tells me there are a lot of places to look if I’m up to no good,” Melancon told Tilkin. “It’s kind of like someone saying, ‘Here’s a list of everybody who’s going to be on vacation this month.’ Now I’ve got a good place to start to find people who aren’t home to break into their house.”
