Congress has been stagnant on making a decision about how the country is tackling cyber security. With the executive order the President finally said I can’t wait any longer. Given what powers the President has, Obama directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other agencies to start enacting some protections, said Howard Schmidt (@howardas), Executive Director of SAFECode and former cyber security advisor to President Obama, in his conversation with Anthony M. Freed (@anthonymfreed), Community Engagement Coordinator for Tripwire, at the 2013 RSA Conference in San Francisco.
One key element of the executive order, said Schmidt, is to get with the private sector, find out what they need, and make it happen. Seems simple enough, right?
If you’re a CISO, you should work with NIST and DHS and explain what your needs are, show what you’re doing to be more resilient and trustworthy, but also explain what you want to do to foster a public-private partnership, said Schmidt.
